During this time of the year, kids are in the swing of a new routine with school and you are likely back in the swing of carpools as well.  Additionally, being back at school means that germs and illnesses will start to appear back in your home! It’s very frustrating that your kids “share” their germs with the family, but let’s talk about ways to try to stay healthy in the midst!

One of the most important aspects of staying healthy during the year is to wash your hands.  We have discussed hand washing last in the past but I cannot over emphasize the importance of it.  It truly is the best way to prevent infection. Soap and water is the best for washing hands but if that’s not easily accessible, hand sanitizer will do.

Another way to help to stay well this year is to stay at home when you are sick or to keep your child at home when he or she is sick! This seems like common sense but it is surprising how many kids go to school when they don’t feel well.  Some common signs and symptoms to watch out for include a fever (over 100.3), vomiting and diarrhea. If your child experiences any of those please keep him or her home for at least 24 hours after symptoms subside!

There are a few general healthy living tips that can also help to keep you and your family well.  This includes eating healthy meals (try to balance fruits, vegetables and proteins), drinking plenty of water and getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

Lastly, make sure that your child’s immunizations are up to date and make sure to have a yearly physical for your child.  If they are not, schedule an appointment with your child’s pediatrician.

If you have any questions about your health and staying healthy as a parent, please reach out to us to schedule an appointment.
