If you have heard it once you have heard it a thousand times…happy back to school!

The kids are in the swing of a new routine and hopefully some of you parents out there are getting some down time and rest. For many of you, back to school is a time of new lessons, new places, and new friends but for many it’s also a time of getting sick.

Back to school means back to germs. There is no avoiding the germs and avoiding school so we wanted to take this week’s blog to talk about how you can stay healthy despite being exposed to back to school germs. With leveraging a few of these we hope that you can stay healthy this school year.

One of the most important aspects of staying healthy during the year is to wash your hands.  We discussed hand washing last post but I cannot over emphasize the importance of it.  It truly is the best way to prevent infection. Kids like to put their hands on everything and before you know it, that dirty hand is smashing a granola bar in to a mouth!  Eaw.  Soap and water is the best for washing hands but if that’s not easily accessible, a hand sanitizer will do.

Another way to help to stay well this year is to stay at home when you are sick or to keep your child at home when he or she is sick! This seems like common sense but it is surprising how many kids go to school when they don’t feel well.  Some common signs and symptoms to watch out for include a fever, vomiting and diarrhea. If your child experiences any of those please keep him or her home!

There are a few general healthy living tips that can also help to keep you and your family well.  This includes eating healthy meals (try to balance fruits, vegetables and proteins), drinking plenty of water and getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

Lastly, make sure that your child’s immunizations are up to date and make sure to have a yearly physical for your child.  If they are not, schedule an appointment with your child’s pediatrician.

If you have any questions about your health and staying healthy as a parent, please reach out to us to schedule an appointment.
