happyholidays

It’s December and that means the holidays are officially here!  It’s a very busy time of the year for everyone and it’s also such a wonderful time of the year.

During this season, it is also common to get sick and to feel exhausted.  That’s why this week’s post is dedicated to giving you a few tips for making your holiday season healthy!

First tip is to make sure you are washing your hands!  This is the #1 way to prevent getting sick and to prevent sharing any sickness you might have with others.  What’s the best way to wash your hands?  Wet them, get some soap and scrub your hands vigorously for about 30 seconds or the time it takes you to sing “happy birthday”. After scrubbing them and working up a good lather, rinse them off with warm water.  Then dry them with paper towel. Try to remember to wash your hands frequently, especially before you eat a meal or snack and after you come in from running errands. Skip the hand sanitizer and go for the soap and water; it’s proven to be more effective!

Second tip is to eat a healthy and balanced diet this holiday season! It’s easy to enjoy sweets all season long but aim to fill your plate with a colorful assortment of vegetables and fruit.  Additionally, try to include a protein and some carbohydrates at each meal. Eating a healthy diet can help keep your immune system powered to keep you well!

Third tip is to drink plenty of water. This season is filled with fun drinks like apple cider and egg nog which are tasty but also full of sugar.  What your body truly needs is to stay hydrated and water is the best way to do that.  Also, when it’s cold outside, heaters inside are on full blast.  The heat tends to dehydrate your skin and so it’s another reason to drink lots of water.

Last tip is to get plenty of rest.  Despite the “to do” lists, your body and your mind need time to shut down and to restore your energy. Try to get 8-10 hours of sleep each night and you should wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer another day!
